"Youth Voices of Neskantaga" Art Exhibit
When a group of 11 students and 6 facilitators from Ryerson University and Mamow Sha-way-gi-kay-win: The North-South Partnership for Children travelled to Neskantaga First Nation in May 2013, the community requested support to hold an Arts and Music Festival. Through a lot of teamwork and late nights the “Team of 17” worked in partnership with Neskantaga First Nation to make the Arts and Music Festival a reality. The Festival was a huge success, and many people from the community came out to showcase their amazing artistic and musical talents!
During the Arts and Music Festival there was a strong sense of hope, inspiration and community felt by many in attendance. As a result some of the youth artists indicated they would like to see this initiative continue. Thus the “Youth Voices of Neskantaga” Art Exhibit was born. The “Team of 17” committed to bring the art back to Toronto, so the youth could share their stories with people in southern Ontario. The Grand Opening of the “Youth Voices of Neskantaga” Art Exhibit took place at the Beit Zatoun gallery on July 26, 2013.
There were three youth artists in attendance (Josh Kendrick, Alyssa Moonias, and Yolanda Sakanee), as well as a Band Councillor (Kelvin Moonias).
